Universidade Lusófona participa em encontro estratégico sobre o futuro das universidades europeias em Paris

Com a presença de representantes de 65 universidades europeias, o encontro destacou a importância crescente das alianças universitárias transnacionais, como a FilmEU, na qual a Universidade Lusófona desempenha um papel de liderança. Entre os participantes estiveram também figuras como David Barry, Reitor do IADT (Irlanda), e Luc Sels, Presidente da Universidade KU Leuven (Bélgica), reforçando a dimensão europeia e colaborativa da iniciativa.

Durante o encerramento da sessão, os discursos da Presidente da Comissão Europeia, Ursula von der Leyen, e do Presidente francês, Emmanuel Macron, deram o tom político e estratégico do encontro. Von der Leyen foi clara ao afirmar que a Europa fez a sua escolha: colocar a ciência e a tecnologia no centro da economia europeia, fazer da inovação uma força ao serviço da humanidade, atrair talento global e transformar as universidades em pilares fundamentais da sociedade. Neste contexto, anunciou um investimento de 500 milhões de euros para o período 2025–2027, destinado a atrair investigadores para a Europa, bem como a criação de uma superbolsa de sete anos no âmbito do Conselho Europeu de Investigação, para apoiar os melhores cientistas em projetos de longo prazo.

Já o Presidente Macron, principal promotor da iniciativa europeia das universidades, reforçou a sua visão ao afirmar que “não pode haver democracia duradoura sem ciência livre e aberta”, sublinhando a urgência de proteger e valorizar a investigação científica num contexto global cada vez mais desafiante. Destacou também os esforços da França para acolher investigadores estrangeiros, nomeadamente norte-americanos, cujos trabalhos em áreas críticas como as alterações climáticas têm sido ameaçados, e anunciou a expansão dessa estratégia ao nível europeu sob o lema “Choose Europe for Science”.

A agenda do dia incluiu ainda um workshop de alto nível no Ministério Francês do Ensino Superior e Investigação, que reuniu decisores políticos, académicos e especialistas para debater os caminhos futuros das alianças universitárias europeias. O encontro abordou temas centrais como a atração de talento, a articulação entre visão estratégica de longo prazo e objetivos de curto prazo, e a necessidade de superar a lógica de financiamento por projetos, caminhando para modelos de investimento estruturais mais sustentáveis e duradouros.

A participação da Universidade Lusófona neste fórum estratégico reafirma o seu papel ativo no cenário europeu do ensino superior, e a sua aposta clara numa universidade cada vez mais internacional, colaborativa e orientada para o futuro. Inserida na aliança FilmEU, com forte foco nas artes, cinema e media, a Lusófona reforça assim o seu compromisso com as políticas europeias de inovação, ciência e educação, num momento decisivo para a consolidação do Espaço Europeu de Educação Superior.

Universidade Lusófona Participates in Strategic Meeting on the Future of European Universities in Paris

On May 5, 2025, Universidade Lusófona took part in Paris in very significant discussions on the future of higher education in Europe, following a formal invitation from President Emmanuel Macron. Representing the university, Professor Bragança de Miranda joined a select group of academic leaders at the high-level meeting titled “The Future of European Universities Alliances: Progress and Developments,” held at the renowned University of the Sorbonne in Paris.

With representatives from 65 European universities in attendance, the event underscored the growing importance of transnational university alliances such as FilmEU, in which Universidade Lusófona plays a central role. Among the participants were David Barry, Rector of IADT (Ireland), and Simon van damme, President of Luca- Leuven University (Belgium), reflecting the pan-European scope and collaborative spirit of the initiative.

The closing session was marked by two high-profile addresses delivered by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Emmanuel Macron. President von der Leyen sent a strong and unequivocal message: Europe has made its choice—to place science and technology at the heart of its economy, to let innovation serve humanity, to welcome global talent, and to make universities pillars of society. In this context, she announced a €500 million funding package for the 2025–2027 period aimed at attracting researchers to Europe, as well as the launch of a seven-year “super grant” under the European Research Council to provide long-term support for the most outstanding scientists.

President Macron, the driving force behind the European Universities initiative, reinforced this vision, stating that “there can be no lasting democracy without free and open science.” He highlighted France’s existing efforts to welcome international researchers—particularly American academics whose work in fields like climate science faces growing threats—and announced the expansion of these measures at a European level under the banner “Choose Europe for Science.”

Later in the day, discussions continued at a High-Level Workshop hosted by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, bringing together policymakers, academic leaders, and experts to explore the future of university alliances in Europe. Key topics included balancing long-term strategic visions with immediate objectives, enhancing the global attractiveness of European higher education, and transitioning from project-based funding to more sustainable and structural investment models.

The participation of Universidade Lusófona in this strategic event reaffirms its commitment to playing an active role in shaping the future of European higher education. As a founding member of the FilmEU Alliance, with a strong focus on cinema, media, and the creative arts, the university continues to strengthen its international profile and deepen its engagement with Europe’s innovation and education agendas at a pivotal moment for the European Higher Education Area.
